The NY Upstate Chapter invites you to our fall seminar focusing on transportation and equity. The seminar is planned for October 14 from 11 am - 2:30 pm and will offer three LACES CEUs.

Implementing the Empire State Trail

This presentation will focus on the development and implementation of the Empire State Trail, with additional discussions on the Hudson River Valley Greenway, Genesee Valley Greenway, and other trails in WNY. Presenters will share their experiences learned during the development and implementation of the on- and off-road design standards, wayfinding standards, access and entry standards, feasibility studies, trail alignment and gap closure, conceptual design and construction drawings.

Inner Loop North Transformation

Throughout the country we are seeing a trend. Underutilized highway systems are being identified for removal with the goal of reconnecting neighborhoods, creating safe city streets for all modes of transportation, and helping to heal the wounds of the past. Building off the success of the Inner loop East project, Inner Loop North seeks to reconnect Rochester’s neighborhoods with Downtown while creating future neighborhood development and economic opportunities for the community. This session will review the history of the Inner loop and discuss the importance of community engagement, the role the landscape architect plays in the design process, and review the tools used to solicit feedback from the community and evaluate the proposed concepts through the lens of racial equity and opportunity for neighborhood growth and prosperity.

A New Vision for the Kensington and Scajaquada Expressways, Buffalo, NY

During this session, attendees will explore the history of the Kensington and Scajaquada corridors from the original Olmsted design through to the current condition. They will also develop an understanding of the impact these expressways have had on both the neighborhoods they pass through, and the Greater Buffalo Region. Finally, they will be presented with a vision for the future of these roadways that takes into account issues of community equity, the environment, and the transportation needs of the future; and they will learn about the planning efforts that have been undertaken to bring about change, and the next steps in the process to get to construction.
