The Annual Upstate ASLA Awards Dinner will be held on April 26th , 2024 in Syracuse, NY from 5PM to 10PM at the historic downtown venue, The Palladian (https://liveatthetreasury.com/p/palladian-hall/). This year we are theming the event “Gilded & Green: Landscape Architecture’s Legacy”. The theme is inspired by this year’s Chapter theme “Roots”. Attendees are encouraged to dress for the period!
Also new this year, we will be offering two opportunities for credit hours instead of the typical hour credit. On Friday April 26th, we will be providing a 1.5 credit Downtown Tour of Syracuse lead by historians from the Onondaga Historical Society. Then on Saturday April 27th, we will be hosting a breakfast and 1.5 credit hour tour of the newly renovated Marshall Hall at SUNY ESF hosted by the Department of Landscape Architecture.
Are you a student, emerging professional, or more established professional looking for some guidance on how to navigate the field of Landscape Architecture? OR are you open to offering some guidance? Then this Mentorship Program is for you!
This mentorship program will run from mid-March to mid-June 2024 and is open to Landscape Design/Architecture professionals and students in the Upstate NY area. You can be in any year of practice to sign up to be a mentee or to be a mentor, feel free to pick which option you feel best fits you.
Since matches will be limited to who participates and to the number of people we have to sign up to be mentors and mentees, please encourage your friends and colleagues to sign up!
HOW IT WORKS:
1.Fill out the application BY Tuesday, MARCH 12th - the sooner the better! (Information shared in the application will remain confidential and will only be used for matching purposes.)
2. Matches will be made by trios, 1 Professional of 8+ years, 1 Emerging/ Developing Professional of 0-7 years, and 1-2 students (undergraduate or graduate)
3. Mentorship trios will be introduced via the first zoom meet up session Tuesday, March 19th @ 6pm. A zoom link will be sent to those who register.
4. After the first session meetings will be asynchronous (aka you will be meeting with your Mentorship groups on your own); we will send email resources once a month until the last month of the program, mid-June.

Join us in Ithaca on October 12 for our next Walk & Talk event.
This tour will explore several notable projects integrated into the historic campus fabric over the previous decade. We will start at Upson Hall and then tour the Schwartz Performing Arts Center Plaza, Cornell Law School, Gannett University Health Center, and Statler Hall and discuss the landscape interventions for each. The tour will focus on the project design principles and contextual relationships and their influence on the campus and the student environment. A social hour will be held afterward at a location to be determined.

Join us in Niagara Falls on Friday, September 22 at 12 p.m. for another exciting event in NY Upstate ASLA’s Walk & Talk series.
Session participants will travel by trolley to the various destinations. The tour will highlight improvements to the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area including the construction of the Niagara Falls International Railway Station and Underground Railroad Heritage Center; as well as improvements to Whirlpool State Park and Niagara Falls State Park including the construction of a new Visitors Center, removal of the Robert Moses Parkway, construction of the Gorgeview park and trail, and other capital improvements/park upgrades.

Join us NEXT WEEK in Geneva on Friday, August 18th at 2pm for the second event in NY Upstate ASLA’s Walk & Talk series.
We will be touring the new DOWNTOWN GENEVA STREETSCAPE. The tour will showcase the City’s close proximity to Seneca Lake, discuss methods used to improve the quality of life in Geneva’s downtown core, including the incorporation of green infrastructure, street trees, and complete streets practices; and encourage everyone to engage in a ‘play everywhere’ approach. Participants will experience how Exchange Street and Castle Street have come ALIVE with more people, more plants, and more pollinators!

Walk & Talk: Explore Great Design with Your Upstate ASLA Community.
We will be walking the ALBANY SKYWAY, a unique project that converted an underutilized highway ramp into an elevated linear park. The tour will look at various elements on the project and will discuss the associated challenges and solutions encountered during planning, design, and construction, co-led by the Design Principal and Project Manager (Gary Sorge and Chris Carter). We will get both the landscape architecture and structural design perspective for a full picture of the project.

This is the second event in a series aimed to explore and expand landscape architecture’s role regarding climate change impacts occurring in urban and natural systems across the Great Lakes Region.
This joint Conference will be held from Wednesday October 12 - Friday October 14, 2022. It is an opportunity for planners, landscape architects and community advocates to learn and share successful strategies for revitalization in the Upstate region. The conference theme “Resilient Together” exemplifies the resolute fortitude that so many in our community have exhibited over the last few years. Through numerous challenges and setbacks, planners and landscape architects alike have held true to their principles to guide their neighborhoods’ recovery and begin again. The conference seeks to explore and celebrate the many ways that our profession has been resilient in environmental, social, and professional matters. Through this gathering the conference will reconnect old friends and create new lasting relationships for the future. The New York State Council of Landscape Architects (NYSCLA) holds board meetings on a quarterly basis. This meeting marks the 4th quarter of the year, which we call our "annual meeting". The NY Upstate Chapter invites you to our fall seminar focussing on transportation and equity. The seminar is planned for October 14 from 11 am - 2:30 pm and will offer three LACES CEUs (pending).
The Western Section Chapter of NY Upstate ASLA, in collaboration with the Emerging Professionals Committee of AIA Buffalo/WNY, presents a discussion on urban farming, its impacts on urban design and planning, and the challenges of operating a working farm in an urban setting.
Join us at 5 Loaves Farm on Saturday, September 11th at 10am as we speak with panelists from 5 Loaves Farm and the University at Buffalo Food Systems Planning and Healthy Communities Lab.
Day two of this two-day seminar (offering up to 13 LA CEUs) will explore both academic and professional projects/strategies to address climate change issues, and will provide a forum to share these strategies and to learn from the experience of others in support of the environmental stewardship of the Great Lakes Region.

Ernest H. Williams, Jr. will present a walk-and-talk at the Rome Sand Plains in Rome, NY. Attendees will experience this DEC-designated Unique Area and learn about its evolution in the post-glacial period, as well as the unique issues faced by those who are stewards of this habitat. An extant feature of Glacial Lake Iroquois, the Rome Sand Plains are home to wild lupine and the threatened frosted elfin butterfly. Join Ernest for an exploration of the area’s glacial beginnings, its history prior to the opening of the Erie Canal, its unique ecological setting, successes and failures in lupine planting, and the challenges of combating succession in maintaining the lupine and frosted elfin habitat.
