As part of a coordinated communications strategy, Conrad and Voraakhom reported via social media on their participation in events organized with Architecture 2030, the Government of Thailand, Bellona Europe Foundation, and other organizations, which ASLA reposted. These posts had 71,000 impressions and more than 6,000 engagements.

In Egypt, Voraakhom met with U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (Democrat-Rhode Island), World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and ASLA partners America Is All In and the American Institute of Architects to discuss ASLA program opportunities at COP28 in Dubai, U.A.E.

Planning Retreat 2022

Hello fellow Landscape Architects and happy holiday season! As we come to a close on 2022 and start welcoming 2023, the future is bright. Our Chapter continues to thrive due to our members and dedicated volunteers, and we thank you for that.

We will continue having discussions revolving around diversity, equity, and inclusion, community resilience, and people centric planning and design; as well as other important topics in and around our field. Our Chapter will be working to hear more from you all over the next year related to our NY Upstate ASLA community as well as student and member engagement.

We completed a day and a half planning retreat earlier this month with our Chapter’s members, volunteers and students. We plan to share our discussion topics and draft calendar for the 2023 year as part of the January newsletter. We are looking forward to an in-person awards celebration in March and getting together by sections throughout the year. News from National - August Trustee Report

August 2022 Trustee Report

Michele A. Palmer

NEWS

ASLA submitted a nomination to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to include the landscape architecture CIP Code on the Department’s STEM-Designated Degree Program list.

Included in ASLA’s submission is an updated version of our white paper, Landscape Architecture is a STEM Discipline, which includes a comprehensive section on Landscape Architecture Education’s Use of STEM-Related Research, Innovation, and Technology.  This section (Section 4; pages 20-41) includes many examples of university landscape architecture program-led research projects, including projects that partner with federal, state, and local government agencies.  In fact, some of these projects partner with the US Army Corps of Engineers, USDA, USDOT, HHS, and more. The section also highlights the development and deployment of new technologies by university landscape architecture departments, faculty, and students, including several projects that led to the issuance of U.S. patents.  The section continues with a brief history of landscape architecture’s practice and the US patent classification system, a clear indicator of the profession’s work in developing new technologies.

In all, ASLA and landscape architecture programs across the country presented a persuasive argument for including the discipline on the STEM list.  DHS will likely announce updates to the list in early 2023.

Landscape Architecture Magazine won six EXCEL Awards: two golds, three silvers, and one bronze in the circulation category of 10,001 to 20,000.

CEO Torey Carter-Conneen was featured in a The Washington Blade column congratulating him on earning a Business of Pride award.

The Washington Post interviewed several ASLA members for their article, “Grass is a water hog. Here’s how to create a drought-tolerant yard.” They also linked to “Sustainable Residential Design: Improving Water Management” and “Sustainable Residential Design: Applying Ecological Design” guides on asla.org in the piece.

Development & Strategic Partnerships

Public Relations, Communications and Marketing

The marketing company Constant Contact featured a landscape architect character in their recent ad, which was covered by Ad Week.

ASLA released a statement expressing disappointment in the U.S. Supreme Court decision on West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which limits the agency’s authority to address our nation’s climate crisis.

Several outlets ran stories connecting landscape architecture’s positive impacts and potential in the face of a warming climate, including Phys.org and Inhabitat.

Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor and publisher of Nation magazine, wrote an opinion piece for The Washington Post that highlighted Frederick Law Olmsted’s contributions to public spaces, talked about his impact on journalism, and the healing power of designed landscapes today.

Sara Zewde spoke to NPR about Frederick Law Olmsted, the Olmsted 200 anniversary, and his lasting impact today.

Architizer published the piece “Why Landscape Architects Are the Unsung Heroes of the Design World“ where they shared, “Now more than ever, our cities need landscape architects.”
